I had a dream...

Another great session for Huan!  He is on a steady roll with his open
communication using the letter board.  His fluency on the board also
improves every week!  Here is the lesson on Martin Luther King's, I
have a dream speech.  I read an abridged version of the speech aloud
to Huan and then asked the following questions.  I did not tell Huan
who wrote the speech or what it was about before I read it to him.

What does abridged mean?  SHORTEN

Do you know who gave this speech?  MARTIN LUTHER KING

What is this speech about?  CIVIL RIGHTS

What does manacles mean?  HANDCUFFS
What does poverty mean?  NOT MONEY

What does discrimination mean?  NOT EQUAL TREATMENT

"Five score years ago," the opening phrase of King's speech, is an
allusion to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Why was this an
appropriate and strong way for King to begin his speech?

"Before you answer this question, can you tell me how many years are
in a score?" TWENTY....."So how many years is five
score?"....HUNDRED....

(in reference to the question above) IT WAS APPROPRIATE BECAUSE HE WAS
TALKING ABOUT RIGHTS FOR BLACK PEOPLE!

One hundred years later, what did King feel was still "crippling"
black people?  DISCRIMINATION

"I Have a Dream" was a persuasive speech meant to convey to King's
audience the need for change and encourage them to work for federal
legislation to help end racial discrimination. If you had been in the
crowd that day, do you think you would have been moved by King's
speech? Why or why not?   I WOULD HAVE FELT REMORSEFUL FOR BLACK PEOPLE.

Has discrimination ever affected your life?  I WAS DISCRIMINATED
AGAINST LIKE BLACK PEOPLE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO TALK.  "how were you
treated?"  I WAS TREATED LIKE I WAS STUPID.  (heartbreaking....)
What is your dream? Is there something within your world that you
would like to see changed or improved upon? MY DREAM IS UNDERSTANDING
FOR ALL PEOPLE NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE OR WHAT COLOR THEIR SKIN IS.

*Such great work today!!!  Huan continues to amaze me with his huge
heart and compassion for others!  Will you post the video again and
send the link to me?  Ly, thanks for the instruction on this!  After
some playing with it this weekend, I was finally able to get a video
up on youtube!!!  Elizabeth
