HV on Crime and Context 6/17/15
HV 6/16/15 How are you today? SO HAPPY THIS IS THE LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL. IT HAS BEEN A LONG YEAR. I AM READY FOR A BREAK! CRIME AND CONTEXT CONTEXT IS THE BACKGROUND OF A SITUATION OR EVENT. SO, PEOPLE MAY LOOK AT CRIMES DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON THE SITUATION. HARVARD PROFESSOR, MICHAEL TREADWAY, STUDIED THE EFFECT OF CONTEXT ON PUNISHMENTS THAT PEOPLE GAVE FOR CRIMES. THIS IS AN INTERESTING CONCEPT. I AM NOT SURE THAT CONTEXT SHOULD MATTER. A CRIME IS A CRIME. TREADWAY HAD HIS SUBJECTS MRIED WHILE THEY EVALUATED CRIME SCENES. THE MRIS LOOKED AT THE AMYGDALA AND PREFRONTAL DORSOLATERAL CORTEX (This should be dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. I pointed this out to Huan so he would know).THE AMYGDALA LOOKS AT EMOTIONS AND THE DORSOLATERAL PREFRONTAL CORTEX IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DECISION MAKING. ANOTHER GROUP WAS SHOWN THE SAME CRIME SCENES BUT WERE TOLD IT WAS AN ACCIDENT OR UNINTENDED. THE ANTERIOR TEMPORORO-PARTIAL CORTEX. (Here Huan confused the areas of the brain - which is super tough on 1 time hearing it...should be dorsal anterior cingulate cortex + temporo-parietal junction)KICKED IN AND BLOCKED REACTIONS TO THE AMYGDALA. THEN THE SUBJECTS HAD A MUCH MORE LENIENT PUNISHMENT. THESE REGIONS OF THE BRAIN HANDLE EMPATHY. SO IT LETS YOU PUT YOURSELF IN SOMEONE ELSE'S SHOES. THIS IS A REALLY INTERESTING STUDY OF HOW CONTEXT INFLUENCES YOUR BRAIN. IT BRINGS UP A LOT OF QUESTIONS LIKES DOES THIS VARY ACROSS AND CULTURES AND HOW EMPATHY DEVELOPS WITH AGE. I WONDER IF AUTISTICS WOULD SHOW THE SAME RESULTS. |

CRIME AND CONTEXT Opening thoughts? JUST THAT I AM HAPPY. INTERPRETATIONS DIFFER BASED ON A PERSON'S OWN EXPERIENCE. THE CONTEXT MAY HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT FOR BOTH PEOPLE. CONTEXT SUBSTANTIATE OR REFUTE MADE TO CONTEXT ALONE CANNOT GIVE ENOUGH INFORMATION AND IT IS HARD TO DETERMINE A MOTIVE. HARVARD READ A MURDER SCENARIO AND DETERMINE A PUNISHMENT. HIS PARTICIPANTS WERE GETTING THEIR BRAINS SCANNED WHILE THEY WORKED. NEUROIMAGERY THE AMYGDALA DIPFC SO THE DOCTOR CAN SEE BOTH PARTS AT WORK. MORE ACTIVITY IN THE AMYGDALA THEY WORKED TOGETHER. IT WENT FROM MURDER TO ACCIDENTAL HUNTING ACCIDENT DORSAL ANTERIOR CINGULATE CORTEX. IT KEPT THE MORE SEVERE EMOTION IN CHECK WHEN DETERMINING PUNISHMENT EMPATHY WHAT THE SITUATION LOOKS LIKE FROM ANOTHER PERSONS PERSPECTIVE He was so happy yesterday! HV on Can you see me?
So, today we had our APS visitors. I gave Huan a bunch of choices for his lesson - Investment, Robert Frost and Can You See Me? - a lesson featuring Ido Kedar and his views on looking past labels to ability. Huan chose the latter. As you can see, he did incredibly well. I could not get one ounce of emotion from our guests. At the end, I asked Huan if he had a message for our visitors - you can see his response. I then asked them if they had any questions for Huan and they said no. I was floored by this and said, "really, after what you have just seen, you don't have any questions or a response to what Huan has just said to you." They just stared at me. Finally Elaine said, "thank you for letting us watch." I will be very interested to see what kind of feedback you get from them. HV 6/2/15 What do you want to talk about? IDO KEDAR Do you want to answer questions first or go right to summarizing? SUMMARIZING IDO IS AN AUTISTIC WHO COMMUNICATES THROUGH RPM. HE WROTE A BOOK ABOUT AUTISM. I WANT TO WRITE A BOOK TOO. IDO IS AUTISTIC ONLY THAT IS A PART OF WHO HE IS. I AM LIKE IDO HE AND I ARE BOTH AUTISTIC BUT THAT IS ONLY PART OF WHO WE ARE. I WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR MORE THAN MY AUTISM. I WANT TO WRITE SO THAT MY EXPERIENCES CAN HELP OTHERS. I HAVE SUFFERED TOO MUCH FROM PEOPLE NOT HAVING RESPECT AND TOLERANCE FOR ME. I DON'T WANT TO SEE OTHERS HAVE THE SAME DIFFICULTY I HAD. IDO WROTE ABOUT OSCAR PISTORIUS BECAUSE HE WAS AN EXCELLENT ATHLETE WHO HAPPENS TO NOT HAVE LEGS. THEN HE KILLED HIS GIRLFRIEND. NOT GREAT MORALS BUT STILL A GREAT RUNNER. INSTEAD OF PISTORIUS WE CAN FOCUS ON WALLACE WHO HAD HIS LEG AMPUTATED. I THINK THESE HARD WORKING GUYS ARE AMAZING. THEIR ENDURANCE IS INCREDIBLE. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISABLED ATHLETES AND NORMAL ATHLETES IS THEIR BODIES. BOTH WORK HARD IN THEIR COMPETITIONS AND TRAINING. IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT THEY ARE DISABLED I THINK THEY ARE ALL INCREDIBLE ATHLETES. CW:How do you want to be recognized in the world? I WANT TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR MY ABILITIES NOT BY DISABILITIES. DOESN'T EVERYONE? I THINK TOO MUCH EMPHASIS IS PUT ON LABELS. JUST LET PEOPLE BE WHO THEY ARE! IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO RESPECT AND INCLUDE PEOPLE THAN USE LABELS. LABELS ISOLATE AND EXCLUDE. NO ONE DESERVES THAT. I THINK THAT INSTEAD OF TRADITIONAL REQUIREMENTS WE SHOULD ALL PEOPLE THINK AND COMMUNICATE THE BEST WAY THEY CAN. NOT EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT! ADDICTIONS TO ADD FALSE INFORMATION TO MAKE IT LOOK BETTER. HE IS DOUBTFUL. TO BE HONEST, I HAVEN'T READ A MEMOIR. MAYBE ONCE I CAN VOTE. DEATH, THE AFTER LIFE AND RETURNING TO LIFE. I LOVED all the cool things Huan had to say in this lesson!!! *On another note, when talking to some of the families about the summer group sessions, I have had a request to move the group from 9-12 to 11-2 or 12-3. Would this still work for you. So far, it seems like it would for most. The kids would still bring a brown bag lunch for social and topic discussion time! Getting excited about this venture! 5/5/15 We're gonna talk about futurist language evolution, any guess about what that means? I THINK IT IS ABOUT SOCIETY'S IMPACT ON LANGUAGE. MANY WORDS DEVELOP WITH CHANGES IN OUR WORLD. SELFIE REFERS TO A PICTURE OF YOURSELF. IT IS WIDELY USED NOW BUT IT IS NOT A NEW CONCEPT. SELF PORTRAITS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS. What does Wittgenstein's quote mean? "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." WORDS REFLECT OUR IDEAS. THIS MEANS THE MORE IDEAS WE HAVE, THE MORE WORDS WE NEED. I NEED MANY WORDS TO KEEP UP WITH MY IDEAS! THE OED USES SOFTWARE TO TRACK WORDS ON THE INTERNET. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH USE OF THE WORD SELFIE, THE OED NAMED IT WORD OF THE YEAR IN 2013. WORDS COME IN AND OUT OF STYLE LIKE CLOTHES DO. SOME NEW WORDS ARE PORTMANTEAUS. THIS MEANS TWO WORDS COMBINED TOGETHER TO MAKE A NEW WORD LIKE SCHMEAT, WHICH IS SHEET AND MEAT. THIS MEANS FAKE MEAT PRESSED INTO SHEETS. CELLFISH IS A GREAT MEANING. IT REFERS TO IGNORING OTHERS WHILE YOU ARE ON THE PHONE. THE AUTHORS OF THE AGE OF EARTHQUAKE HAVE CREATED NEW WORDS TO DESCRIBE THINGS THAT WE EXPERIENCE IN OUR MODERN WORLD. MONOPHOBIA DESCRIBES A FEAR OF BEING INDIVIDUALS.THIS IS APPARENT WHEN YOU LOOK AROUND AND SEE SO MANY ACTING LIKE EACH OTHER. TIME SNACK IS ANOTHER USEFUL WORD TO DESCRIBE THE TIME IT TAKES FOR THE COMPUTER TO UPLOAD NEW INFORMATION. Creative Writing: 20th century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” Reflect on the lesson and tell me what you think of Wittgenstein’s message here. You are now a futurist author! Create a few futurist words or phrases to describe anything in our modern world. Ready for more? Create the explanation or use it in several sentences that will make the definition of the word obvious to your reader. Here is a great example to emulate… Smupid: The sensation that we’ve never been smarter as individuals and yet somehow we’ve never felt stupider. Example, “yes I know I was able to obtain a list of all Oscar winners from 1952 in three tenths of a second, yet it makes me feel smupid that I didn’t waste two hours visiting the local library to obtain that list.” In our newly smupid world, the average IQ is now 103, but it feels like 97. One possible explanation for smupidity is that people are generally far more aware then they ever were of all the information they don’t know. The weight of this fact overshadows huge advances in knowledge accumulation and pattern-recognition skills honed by online searching. I am now smupid. We’re all kind of smupid. An the future is even smupider. The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present SMUPID! SUCH A PERFECT WORD TO DESCRIBE THE WAY PEOPLE ARE TODAY. OUR SOCIETY IS HIGHLY EDUCATED BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE PEOPLE SMART. YOU ARE ABLE TO ACCESS INFORMATION IN SPLIT SECONDS. THAT INFORMATION DOES NOT SEEM TO MAKE PEOPLE SMARTER. THAT ONLY MAKES THEM MORE INFORMATION FILLED. THAT INFORMATION ONLY NEEDS TO MORE FACTS NOT MORE SMARTS. ALL WE NEED TO DO IS ADD THOUGHT AND THEN WE MIGHT BE SMARTER INSTEAD OF SMUPID. |

HV 4/28/15 THE SITUATION A PERSON IS IN NOT THEIR PERSONALITY TRAITS. NORMS ARE USED IN GROUPS TO MAKE IT HARD TO DEVIATE FROM THE GROUPS RULES. ALL GROUPS FACE CHALLENGES OF PEOPLE WANTING TO BE LEADERS AND WE USE POWER TO MAKE PEOPLE COMPLY. OBEDIENCE IS SOMETIMES NECESSARY IN SOCIETY. PROBLEMS SURFACE WHEN INDIVIDUALS WHO SHOULD NOT BE IN CONTROL ARE THOSE IN POWER. THE HORRIBLE PROBLEMS THAT AROSE IN WORLD WAR TWO ARE BECAUSE HITLER WAS GOOD AT CONTROLLING THE NAZIS. MILGRIM STUDIED THE USEFUL TACTIC OF OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY. THE LEARNER DID NOT FACE REAL HARM BUT THE REAL PARTICIPANT WAS UNAWARE AND SHOCKED THEM EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW IT HURT. AMAZING RESULTS WERE CONCLUDED FROM THIS STUDY. FACING POWERFUL AUTHORITY FIGURES CAN BE INTIMIDATING FOR A BELIEVER OF AUTHORITY ALLOWING FOR PROBLEMS TO HAPPEN. IT IS FOR THIS REASON PEOPLE NEED TO USE FACTS TO MAKE CHOICES NOT OPINIONS. IT WAS NICE TO WORK WITH YOU. |
